Fluoride Treatments

Owings Mills Dentistry

What are Fluoride Treatments?

Fluoride treatments are a great way to further protect and strengthen your teeth. Fluoride is helpful when it comes to preventing tooth decay, which would otherwise cause the need for fillings or root canals. Despite finding fluoride in many dental products and public water sources, most patients will benefit from added fluoride treatment. This is especially true in the case of children who are often more susceptible to tooth decay.

Why would Fluoride Treatments be needed?

You might be looking for a way to further strengthen your teeth. You already have a lot of fillings and you want to prevent the need for future treatment. If you’re a parent, you want to know that your children’s teeth are healthy and strong. Fluoride can help to prevent instances of decay that could require invasive treatment.

Who is a candidate for Fluoride Treatments?

Fluoride treatments are done quickly and easily in our office. In fact, most treatments are done in as little as a few seconds and can be completed in conjunction with other procedures. We often recommend fluoride treatments to our pediatric patients. However, there is no age limit on who can benefit from having these treatments done.

What happens during the Fluoride Treatment process?

The treatment process will begin by applying a liquid fluoride varnish to the teeth. This helps to protect and strengthen the teeth from instances of tooth decay. In order for the fluoride to work properly, you should avoid drinking, eating or rinsing for about 30 minutes following the appointment. We can apply this fluoride as often as it is needed or requested by the patient. You can and still should keep up with routine at-home care in order to keep your teeth healthy and strong. For our pediatric patients, we typically apply fluoride as a routine treatment during their checkup appointments. Fluoride is safe and effective when used in a professional setting.
